Choosing clear aligners is a fantastic way to upgrade your smile without the cumbersome look of traditional metal braces. Our patients at Baymeadows Family Dentistry love them because they are virtually unnoticeable in everyday life. However, maintaining that “invisible” look requires a little bit of strategy. The medical-grade plastic used to make your aligners is smooth, but it still features tiny pores that can easily absorb dark pigments if you aren’t careful.
Below we share key tips for keeping your aligner trays clear and discrete.
Temperature, Expansion, and Discoloration
Many patients know they shouldn’t drink coffee or tea with their aligners, but few realize why temperature matters so much. When plastic is exposed to heat, it expands slightly on a microscopic level, opening up those tiny surface pores. If you drink any non-water beverage while wearing your aligners, or put them back in while your mouth is still warm, you place the pigments in the aligner. As the plastic cools and contracts, it traps the pigments, causing permanent yellowing.
Remove Morning Biofilm
When you sleep, your natural saliva flow drops, which allows a thin layer of bacteria and proteins (known as biofilm) to accumulate over your teeth and your aligners. If you simply rinse your trays with water in the morning and pop them back in, that biofilm dries, hardens, and takes on a dull, cloudy appearance. To prevent this, brush your aligners every morning. Use a soft-bristled brush and a clear, non-abrasive liquid soap (not toothpaste) to dissolve the film before it stains.
Managing the “Dry Case” Discoloration
Whenever you take your aligners out to eat a meal here in Jacksonville, you should always place them directly into their protective case. However, letting loose saliva dry on the trays while they sit in a dark, airtight case creates a breeding ground for odor-causing bacteria and mineral buildup. Always rinse your trays thoroughly with cool water before placing them in the case. Additionally, leave the case cracked open slightly to let air circulate and keep the plastic clear.
